The sequel to “Beetlejuice” faced decades of development challenges before finally being made. Initially, in 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel titled “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.” Tim Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite the script, and although Pamela Norris did rewrite it, Warner Bros. later offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite, which he declined. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired in 2011 to write and produce a new version of the sequel, and Mike Vukadinovich revised his script in 2017.

The screenplay for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” that was ultimately filmed was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of the hit series “Wednesday.” Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, produced the sequel, which was filmed in London before moving to Vermont and Massachusetts.
