Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder slated to star in Beetlejuice sequel

Throughout the 80s and 90s, several now-classic movies hit the big screen and introduced generations of kids to the horror genre. Flicks like Ghostbusters, The Lost Boys, and Beetlejuice opened the door to the realm of spooks and specters for countless youngsters. Now, after more than 30 years, Tim Burton and company are primed to do it again with a Beetlejuice sequel.

We have heard rumors about the return of the afterlife’s foremost bio-exorcist. Last month, Warner Bros. officially confirmed that a Beetlejuice sequel is in the works, according to Entertainment Weekly. Earlier this week, the studio set things in stone when they announced an official release date. They plan to launch the long-awaited sequel on September 6, 2024. As it stands, the film will open against the upcoming Blade reboot from Marvel.

However, with the current WGA strike in effect, films are seeing production delays. Depending on how long it takes studio fat cats to come to the table with a worthwhile bargain for the writers, these projects may be pushed back further.

What We Know About the Beetlejuice Sequel

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel. The studio is holding its cards close to its vest, at the moment. However, the scant details they have released all point to this being a great trip down memory lane for those who grew up with the Ghost with the Most and a solid introduction for those who didn’t.

For one, we know that Tim Burton will direct the movie. Michael McDowell, Larry Wilson, and Warren Skaaren shared writing duties on Beetlejuice but won’t return for the sequel. The upcoming movie’s IMDb page shows that Alfred Gough wrote a draft of the screenplay. The site also credits Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg with writing earlier iterations of the screenplay.

Michael Keaton is returning as Beetlejuice and Winona Ryder will reprise the role of Lydia Deetz. Additionally, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega will portray Lydia’s as-yet-unnamed daughter. IMDb also lists Justin Theroux in a currently unnamed role.

If you’re itching for a Beetlejuice fix while waiting on the sequel, you can stream the original on Hulu and Apple TV. Additionally, you can rent it on Vudu and Red Box. However, if you’re looking for the animated series, you might be out of luck.
