Otavio has everything he could want. He’s one of the richest men in Brazil, he owns a private security firm, and has a beautiful wife. He’s a member of an elite club of other rich Brazilian men known as the Cannibal Club: basically, a bunch of rich dudes watch a couple of people fuck then they eat some people in formal dinner attire and talk about how awesome being rich is. Otavio likes to double dip in the ol’ long pig though; he and his wife regularly eat their employees.  What could go wrong in such a wholesome environment.

Okay. I want to start out by saying that I was incredibly disappointed with this movie. That’s more the fault of the advertising than the actual film, though. The first line of the press release for this movie says it is “widely regarded as the goriest movie in years” so I went in expecting some South American brutality with a side of evisceration garnished with cannibalism. I got none of that. The body count is pretty low and the only two of the kills have any real gore to them. The cannibalism aspect is really understated as well. I’m sorry but if you’re going to bill your movie as a gorefest it needs to deliver.

So what was I given instead of the cannibal gorefest I showed up for? I’m not sure. It’s kind of a thriller, kind of a crime film, kind of a satirical piece taking the piss out of the rich. Whatever it is, it comes together well enough. It’s all just rich people being rich and eating poor people until Gilda finds one of the most powerful men in Brazil and the founder of the Cannibal Club getting a good sound fucking from one of the security guards. The problem is, homeboy is so deep in the closet that he’ll kill to keep his secret. That’s where shit gets interesting and Otavio and Gilda have to find a way to survive. The plot moves well, it’s an interesting story, and the performances are pretty solid. When there is gore on screen it looks good, not super realistic but it looks pretty decent all the same so there’s that. I probably would’ve enjoyed it a lot more without the expectations.

All in all, would I recommend this movie? Meh. Check it out if you get a chance. It definitely has its moments. Cannibal Club will be coming to VOD and select theaters in March.
