Incredible Violence Review – Meta to the Madness

Incredible Violence (2018)

The meta horror movie technique has been around for quite a while. Post- Scream, tons of these self-aware films have come into creation. It’s a formula that can work well within the horror genre, playing on over used tropes and the wit of the devoted community.

Incredible Violence is a new indie movie that lends itself to this method. G. Patrick Condon uses this platform to launch his first full-length feature. The story is a tale of a hack filmmaker who squandered all of a shady producer’s money and then chooses to kill off his cast for real to make it look authentic.

It’s easy to dismiss Condon’s movie as another clichéd meta horror. The “a director who kills his actors for real” plot isn’t exactly a new idea. Underneath the surface though, Condon seems to be hinting at a much deeper meaning to it all. Casting someone to play the director with his own name was a nice touch and adds that extra level of satire. The filmmaker seems to be showing the audience a glimpse at extreme method acting and well as a statement about how far actors are willing to go for a director. Add a little hopelessness of what a mismanaged set can turn into and its a pretty good allegory for shoddy filmmaking.

M.J. Kehler in Incredible Violence (2018)

All in all, the movie spoke to me as someone who’s made indie horror movies. While it may not be for everyone, it does have enough twists and gore to satisfy the horror audience. Condon turns the plot on its head halfway through and leaves an uneasy feeling to what’s going to happen next. The acting is good and the score is excellent and haunting. There’s violence for sure but that’s not the sole purpose of the film.
