Macon Blair to Write/Direct Toxic Avenger Reboot

0

We recently discussed The Toxic Avenger on The Horror Basement and it was pretty much unanimous: we love us some Toxie. I might go as far as to call him my favorite superhero. If you haven’t watched it yet, I really think you should. This article isn’t about my love for Toxie. I wrote one of those a couple weeks ago. This is about the Toxic Avenger remake.

Yeah, I honestly don’t know how I feel about one of the coolest franchises in history and the flagship of Troma getting a remake. Legendary got the rights to make the film last year and have been really pushing to get it done since then. Luckily, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the masterminds behind the original Toxie film and all around legends, are set to produce. This in an of itself gives me hope for the movie. Today it was announced who would be helming the remake and I gotta tell you, my interest is piqued.

Macon Blair will be writing and directing the remake. Honestly, I had never heard of the guy until today. As soon as I did, though, I hit up his IMDb page to find out what he’s all about. Honestly, I’m pretty okay with what I found. I’ve never seen any of the films he’s worked on but the ones I had heard of, I have been meaning to check out like the Netflix original Hold the Dark that came out last year. Ones I hadn’t heard of like The Monkey’s Paw  and I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore but both of them look great. The Monkey’s Paw is pretty obvious but the other film looks like a dark comedy kind of in the vein of God Bless America which I absolutely loved. So, from some light examination his filmography looks pretty good. It is important to note that he wrote all of those films and the only movie he directed is I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore which, from the trailer, looks really good.

Time will tell how his style of writing and directing will mesh with Tromaville’s greatest hero. I plan to keep an open mind until I see it, though. I honestly don’t think that Kaufman and Herz would let the remake stray too far from the original film and Blair seems to ba damn fine writer.

I plan on staying up to date on this story and you will know things as I find them out. Stay tuned!
