FUCKED UP FRIDAYS: Hooker with a Hacksaw (includes snippet from an interview with director Donald Farmer)

Hooker with a Hacksaw follows Kirsten, a phone sex worker who has some serious problems. Between the pills, pervs, and motherfuckers in pigeon masks she’s got a lot on her plate. When it all comes crashing down though, Kirsten has two things that can help her make it through: a big ass hacksaw and a badass attitude.

Kirsten actually isn’t a hooker in the beginning, she’s a phone sex girl who never meets clients. That is until she’s down on her luck and in dire need of a vintage action figure. When she finds that she doesn’t have enough to cop said awesome action figure, she decides to meet up with a client to get the money. Priorities, right? That guy, who turns out to be a grade-A weirdo, gives her contact info to a friend of his and that’s where the shit really hits the fan. Things go downhill for Kirsten and she ends up cutting motherfuckers up with a hacksaw. I guess the moral of the story is stick to your principals or you’ll end up suffering the consequences. Maybe it’s don’t be a fucking creep. I’m not a philosopher.

Have you ever watched one of those old low-budget shot on video horror flicks? Okay. Now imagine that but shot on digital in a modern setting. That’s Hooker with a Hacksaw. It’s all the batshit crazy fun of one of those older flicks with a modern look. The heart of the film is pure old school splatter, though with plenty of blood, guts, and severed limbs to go around.

For a movie with the word “hooker” in the title, there is definitely less sex and naked flesh than you’d expect. Other than that though, you get exactly when you expect from the title. There’s a hooker, she’s got a hacksaw, and she knows how to use it. Besides, anyone who tells you that you need full frontal nudity and sex to inject a little sleaze into a movie has obviously never seen a blood-soaked lady of the evening giving an intestine a handjob. That’s right. Intestinal handjob. If you don’t think that’s worth the price of admission I honestly don’t know what the hell is wrong with you!

For those of you who happen to be in the great state of Tennessee, you may notice some locations in this film as a lot of it was shot in and around Manchester. Matter of fact, I interviewed the director of this film and many others, Donald Farmer, the other night and we talked a little about this movie and some of the locations.

All in all, would I recommend Hooker with a Hacksaw? Fuck yeah I would! Donald Farmer’s movies are incredibly fun and this one is no exception. The combination of his vision and the uncut badassery of leading lady Kasper Meltedhair makes this one hell of a ride. You can check it out exclusively on Amazon Prime right now. If you don’t have Prime, it’s only a couple bucks to rent and it’s worth every penny.

Yeti: Speaking of which, I’ve been looking for a hard copy of Hooker with a Hacksaw. Did it get a DVD release?

Donald Farmer: So far all we’ve done with that is Amazon Prime but we’re going to put it out on DVD before the end of the year. It’ll be either summer or fall but it will be out before the end of the year. We’re giving Amazon Prime a little window of exclusivity to encourage people to see it there, after that we’ll have the DVD out.

Y: That’s definitely something to look forward to. Are you going to use the Simon Pritchard cover (Pritchard did a hand-painted poster for the film’s UK premiere) for that or are you going with something different?

DF: It’ll definitely be on there. We haven’t decided yet if we’re going to do a solo cover or a double sided cover but that will definitely be the cover or one of the covers.

Y: That’s awesome to hear, I love that guy’s work.

DF: Oh yeah, he’s really talented. We have another really talented artist who has done a great poster for Cannibal Hookers for when we put that out. We actually have two really great posters, one by Graham Humphreys who does a whole lot of covers for Arrow videos. Several Arrow videos have covers by him. And then we’ve got another guy from Italy who did an alternate cover that’s really great.

Y: I’m really looking forward to both of those releases. Hooker with a Hacksaw was so goddamned fun.

DF: We actually shot several places in Manchester for that.

Y: I actually had a couple questions about sets for that! When she’s going for the final showdown in the third act, she’s in front of this building with this like fetal alien skeletal buffalo thing painted on the wall on like a warehouse. Where was that?

DF: That’s in Lexington, Kentucky. We filmed that part in Lexington. We love that painting that’s on the side of the building so we had her pose in front of it. That’s just a real mural on the side of this building in downtown Lexington and it’s right nextdoor to the warehouse that we were using as our studio. There’s a warehouse in downtown Lexington that is basically our unofficial studio. We used it in the last couple movies. We used it in Cannibal Hookers as well. They have space in there where you can create your own sets and everything. Then they have concrete floors with a drain in the floor so you can make much blood as you want. At the end of the night you can just get a hose and spray it down and just let all the blood go down the drain. It’s really perfect for filming gory scenes. You know you’re not going to make a mess on the concrete floor when you can just spray everything away.

Y: Well that’s handy.

DF: We shoot in that studio whenever possible. Well, the warehouse that we turned into a studio. That’s where we did the big torture room scene in Hooker with a Hacksaw. It just happens to be right next to the building with the big alien fetus or whatever on the side. It’s a real mural that somebody did on the building and we decided to put it in a movie because we thought it looked so great.

Y: That was an awesome shot, definitely a great choice. Also, the sculpture park with the rhino and the dinosaurs. Where is that?

DF: That’s about twenty miles north of Bowling Green, Kentucky. It’s off of Interstate 65 around mile marker 50. A lot of it’s not there anymore. I was there a few months ago and nearly all the statures that we filmed around are gone now. The only one that’s still there is the triceratops statue. All the other ones like the gorilla and the human dog statue with boobs, those are all gone.  So, apparently someone did some redecorating and decided to get rid of those statues. So, that part of it doesn’t look quite like it did when we found it. So if you go there now all you’ll find from our filming is the triceratops statue. We had her on top of it fondling the horns.

Y: Well, at least that’s still there, I guess.

The conversation went on for awhile before and after this. I’ll get the full version up soon. Stay Tuned.
