Scarecrows tells the story of four kids who are fresh out of high school and wanting to have a little fun. They end up trespassing on the wrong farmer’s land. This farmer doesn’t just yell and fire his gun in there air. No sir. This guy is old school and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty. It just so happens that when his hands get dirty people get nailed to crosses and turned into the world’s worst scarecrows.

The genre has been flooded with eighties throwback movies over the past few years and for the most part, I love them. Scarecrows may be the first movie I’ve seen that is a throwback to mid-nineties horror flicks. Maybe I’m wrong but I got a real nineties teen horror vibe from this movie; the super hot jock and his super hot blonde bitchy girlfriend are traveling with the jock’s kind of nerdy friend and his prudish girlfriend then they’re fucked off by rednecks. I don’t know about you but to me, that sounds like a movie that could have come out alongside Idle Hands or I Know What You Did Last Summer. I know that era gets a ton of hate but I really dig a bunch of those flicks.

There’s a lot to like in this movie. The performances are solid, it’s well shot, and the story is pretty cool. I feel like the back story on the farmer and his family could have been fleshed out more but you’re really given all the setup that you need. I was just hoping for a little exposition. The characters are all pretty enjoyable I daresay they’re even likeable. Even the character that is spoiled and bitchy. Like I said,  Scarecrows feels like a nineties flick: it’s fun, fast paced, and nice to look at.

All in all, would I recommend this movie? Yeah. It’s a fun little distraction with a cool story and some pretty cool visuals. Grab your Jncos and a Surge, settle in, and enjoy that nostalgic feeling.
