Our Halloween Watch List – TN Horror Writers

3
Well, we are officially in late October; we are just a week away from Halloween. Even the normies  are getting into the holiday spirit. And all around the internet, horror sites are putting out lists upon lists of top horror movies to watch for the season. We decided that we’d jump in on that bandwagon, too! We’re all horror fans here and it doesn’t have to be October to dust off classics or find something new to watch but we all have those movies we love to watch around this time of year.  I reached out to our writers and put together a little sampling of what we’ll be watching this Spooky Season. We hope you enjoy it!
Lilly’s Picks

May
May is a creepy psychological horror about a weirdo outcast veterinarian, who becomes a little TOO obsessed with her crush.
Flashbacks of her childhood bullies come flooding in as she realizes she’s just not this guys type. Let’s just say that a woman scorned (who also has unlimited access to surgical tools) makes for a gnarly revenge flick.
I give May a 10/10 always. It’s quite the unique experience, and it’s ending is one that stays on it’s viewers minds long after the movie has ended.
Predator 2
Okay, I may get a lot of crap for this one and I totally understand if I do.
One has to ask, are you a true horror fan if you don’t have at least one cheesy horror movie on your top list? Predator totally does it for me, with it’s all star kick ass cast and it’s absolutely WILD premise. Macho robot aliens have landed on Earth to cause chaos and destroy the world. The only people who can stop them are Danny Glover and Gary Busey. Aren’t you already feeling the genius-ness here?
I love horror with a touch of SciFi and a lot of action, and The Predator series covers all those bases for me. Check it out next time you’re in the mood for macho SciFi – horror. Gary Busey does not disappoint.
Ellie’s Picks

Hocus Pocus
Not really a horror movie, I’ll give you that, but Hocus Pocus is still a great movie to watch if you have kids or friends who don’t like being scared, but still want something spooky and with all the Halloween vibes in the same vein as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloweentown. Not to mention, this year is the 25thanniversary, and it’s even being shown in theatresto celebrate!!
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Rocky Horror has been a must watch for me every Halloween since I was in middle school. I always watch the movie, sure, but if I have a chance to go see a live adaptation or a shadow cast production of the show, I definitely do. The energy is so fun, and the crowd interactions really seal the deal.

The Bat

Every year I show patronage to my late cousin and King of Horror, Vincent Price, by watching one of his many groundbreaking films. In light of the new Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House, it may satisfy you to re-watch one of his most classic films, House on Haunted Hill (which, might I add is NOT the same story. I don’t know if I’m bad at horror or just incompetent, but it took me a loooooong time to realize that, since I’ve never read the book), but I like to watch a different Price film each year, and this year is one of my favorites: The Bat!
Yeti’s Picks

Ernest Scared Stupid

This has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid; the Ernest movies hold a special place in my heart.  This is a fun family friendly movie packed full of gross slimy monsters, stupid jokes, and a liberal dose of nostalgia. It’s like they shot the movie and then dipped in extra Halloween sauce just to be sure. You can’t go wrong with this classic, especially if you have little horror hounds.
Skeletons in the Closet

This is a newer movie that I recently reviewed. It’s a fun, campy, eighties throwback anthology featuring some great characters, including two of the funniest horror hosts since Joe Bob Briggs. This movie is perfect to watch with some friends and a couple of brews and you can find it for FREE on Popcornflix. Give it a shot, you won’t regret it.
Hatchet 2

I fucking LOVE the Hatchet series. All of them are solid movies with really entertaining kills but this one contains one of my favorite kill scenes of all time. The scene in question involves a belt sander which is definitely something you don’t see every day. Watch this one or binge the whole series; the Hatchet movies breathe fresh life into the slasher subgenre.

Terrifier

If you haven’t watched Terrifier yet, you’re fucking up. Art the Clown is an incredible character who is silent but hilarious and scary almost simultaneously. The movie is even set during Halloween! Pull up Netflix and give this one a watch. Seriously. Do it.

Well folks, that’s our list! Hope you enjoyed it and maybe even got some ideas for something to watch. What are your must-watch movies for the Spooky Season? Let us know in the comments!

  1. This list is great. No hate on Predator 2 making this, it has just enough horror to it to make a good “early countdown to Halloween,” or at the very least mix it up later in the month. For me, there are two that are a yearly constant. Trick r' Treat is a must. It just oozes with the season feels. I loved Creepshow as a kid and still do, but this just gets so much right -my favorite anthology horror. Lastly, I do my best to get in at least one theatrical viewing of a classic, Belcourt or elsewhere. This year it ended up being Psycho, Halloween, and House on Sorority Row.
